Daytona USA back Down Under

Classic Sega game returns to a screen near you

The game that honed the virtual wheel skills of a generation is back. Launched late last month, the 1993-vintage arcade classic Sega Daytona USA is now available via the Xbox Live Arcade (800 Microsoft points ) and PlayStation Network ($12.95, available late November).

"Daytona USA is the game that truly defined head-to-head racing for a generation of arcade gamers," said Haruki Satomi, Vice President of Digital Publishing for SEGA of America on the annoucment of the game's return this week.

"We have recreated every element of the Daytona experience for the new console version. Having the ability to play the game in online multiplayer turns your living room into the arcades of yesteryear."

Sega says the home version brings a new coat of graphical widescreen gloss to the retro graphics of the original arcade hit. There is support for the Logitech GT Driving Force steering wheel controller on PS3 and all Xbox 360-supported steering wheel controllers are compatible.

As well as mirrored tracks and a robust online multiplayer mode (though disappointingly no split-screen local multiplayer mode), the game also features challenge and survival modes as well as some wonderful quirks such as the slot machine and "Jeffrey" statue found in the original game.

A karaoke mode is also included so that nostalgic fans can sing along with the background music as they twitch their high-powered car games down the straights, through the tunnels and around the banked turns of a retro crowd favourite.
