SsangYong has released the first teaser images of a Frankfurt motor show-bound concept that points to a new baby SUV conceived to slot in below the existing Korando.
Modestly dubbed the XUV1 (for from 'eXcellent User interface Vehicle 1'), the concept is billed as a "premium crossover utility vehicle" that combines supermini proportions with a high seating position.
Conceived to join the B-segment against the likes of the Nissan Juke, the XUV1 dispenses with convention with its novel seating arrangement (configurable in 1+1+2 or 1+3 forms), accessible via coach-style doors.
"All this versatility comes within the confines of a compact B-segment-sized vehicle, a sector which has experienced rapid growth in crossover models in recent years," claims SsangYong in its official press release.
"Offering the high seating position and rugged feel of a full-sized SUV without any compromise in running costs, crossover models on a supermini scale are fast becoming the ideal motoring solution for today's driver," adds the company's PR blurb.
The Concept XUV 1 features a full-length glass roof and a large, wraparound windscreen, while its design language is more futuristic and sporty than we've been accustomed to from the utilitarian brand.
The vehicle is fronted by a rakish snout that houses slit-like headlights and LED daytime running lights, while the rump also has a sporty look thanks to tapered flanks and a steeply raked rear windscreen.
Befitting its 'Excellent User Interface' moniker, all major cabin functions are controlled via mobile devices and smart instruments.
The latest design study follows in the wheeltracks of the SUT1 concept revealed earlier this year at the Geneva show – and the latter is expected to be shown in production form at Frankfurt.
SsangYong's resurgence comes in the wake of its acquisition in February this year by India's Mahindra & Mahindra, and the two brands are reportedly in the final stages of deciding joint future vehicle platforms – a key to SsangYong's turnaround strategy.
M&M's president of Automotive and Farm Equipment Sectors, Dr Pawan Goenka, was recently quoted as saying: "We don't expect it (Ssangyong) to turn profitable this year from the situation they were in, but expect good volume growth."
"Common platforms will be beneficial for both – our engineers have been working together for the last seven months. Right now is the time for investment and dealership enhancement," Dr Goenka added.
