Volkswagen's Multivan range now offers buyers a more diverse selection of variants, following the importer's decision to offer a new petrol engine.

Developing 150kW and 350Nm, the 2.0-litre four is turbocharged and direct-injected. According to VW the new engine in the Multivan uses 10.1L/100km and emits 236g/km of CO2 in combined-cycle testing. The torque peaks from as low as 1500rpm, so it should provide a diesel-like experience, without the NVH of an oiler.

In pricing terms, the new petrol variants (TSI350) sit between the TDI340 and TDI400 models, although the lower-output diesel is only available in Comfortline trim. All come equipped as standard with DSG transmissions, but only the TDI400 offer 4MOTION (all-wheel drive) variants in the range.

At $54,990, the Multivan TSI350 Comfortline is $5000 more expensive than the TDI340 equivalent and $2000 cheaper than the TDI400. In Highline trim, the Multivan TSI350 is $2000 cheaper than the TDI400 model — $71,990 — with no TDI340 counterpart below it in that grade.
